Instructions & Tips

Can the map be attached to a rough/uneven wall?

The included double-sided mounting tape is designed for smooth, clean, dry and dust-free walls. We do not recommend using it on rough, textured or uneven surfaces, as the tape may not adhere securely. Please make sure your wall is suitable before installation.

Can I install the map myself?

Yes. Pinelini maps are designed for easy self-installation. The Classic 3D map includes clear instructions, an installation plan, a measuring guide and double-sided mounting tape. On a suitable smooth, clean and dry wall, no drilling or additional glue is required. Installation usually takes approximately 1–2 hours. The LED map includes its own mounting system and model-specific instructions.

Is the LED map battery-powered, or does it need to be plugged in?

The LED map is battery-powered, so it does not need to be connected to a power outlet during use. Please follow the instructions included with the map for installing and replacing the batteries.

What's the difference between the Classic 3D and LED wooden world maps?

The Classic 3D map is a layered wooden map without lighting and is attached directly to a suitable wall using the double-sided mounting tape included in the set. The LED map features integrated warm white backlighting, a deeper multi-layer construction and a dedicated mounting system that creates an illuminated floating effect.

How do I choose the right map size for my wall?

Pinelini Classic 3D and LED maps are available in three sizes: L — 105 × 60 cm, XL — 130 × 72 cm and XXL — 181 × 100 cm. Measure the available wall space before ordering and leave enough free space around the map so the composition does not look crowded. We recommend leaving at least 20 cm between the top of the map and the ceiling. You can mark the selected dimensions on the wall with masking tape to check how the map will look in your interior.

Which color map should I choose?

The Classic 3D map is available in Natural, Multicolors, Brown, Bronze and Black. The LED map is available in Natural, Wenge and Skandy. Choose a lighter finish for a soft, natural look or a darker finish to create stronger contrast on the wall. As wood is a natural material, its grain and shade may vary slightly from the product photos.

Is an installation kit included with the map?

Yes. Every Pinelini map comes with an installation kit designed for the selected model. The Classic 3D map includes an installation plan, measuring guide, positioning corners and double-sided mounting tape. The LED map includes its dedicated mounting system and installation instructions. You do not need to purchase a separate installation kit.

How is the Classic 3D map attached to the wall?

The Classic 3D map is attached using the double-sided mounting tape included in the set. No drilling or additional glue is required. For secure adhesion, install the map on a smooth, clean, dry and dust-free wall.

Premium LED Maps

1. What is the difference between the Classic and Premium LED Wooden World Maps?

Both versions feature the same layered wooden map design and signature 3D effect.

The Classic Wooden World Map is attached directly to the wall with double-sided adhesive strips.

The Premium LED Wooden World Map is mounted on a backing board with standoffs, so it sits slightly away from the wall and creates a deeper, more dimensional 3D look. The LED backlighting adds an extra visual effect and makes the map stand out even more in the interior. It also comes with GeoTags, country flags, travel pins and a branded case with a handle.

2. What sizes is the Premium LED Wooden World Map available in?

The Premium LED Wooden World Map is available in the same three sizes as the Classic version:

  • L size — 105 × 60 cm (41.3 × 23.6 in)
  • XL size — 130 × 72 cm (51.2 × 28.3 in)
  • XXL size — 181 × 100 cm (71.3 × 39.4 in)

The map itself is the same size in both versions. The difference is the mounting board, standoffs, LED backlighting and the rest of the Premium set.

3. What's in the PREMIUM box?
  • Mounting board with standoffs for wall installation.
  • Wooden world map pieces — countries and continents laser-cut from natural birch plywood.
  • LED backlighting — 2 LED strips with battery boxes and adhesive strips.
  • Antarctica with its own mounting board, plus islands placed separately around the main map.
  • 36 GeoTags for marking past and future trips.
  • 167 country flags and travel pins with car, plane, house and heart symbols.
  • 18 decorative elements — 6 ships, 5 ocean names, 4 planes, 1 lighthouse, 1 compass rose and 1 anchor.
  • Layout guide and installation instructions.
  • Branded case with a handle.
4. How do I install the Premium LED Wooden World Map?
  1. Assemble the mounting board using the diagram and letter markings.
  2. Attach the wooden map pieces to the board with the included double-sided adhesive strips, starting with the largest pieces. You will end up with two main sections: A (North and South America) and B (Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia).
  3. Position the map on the wall, check that it is level and mark the mounting points. Drill the holes, insert the wall anchors and screw in the standoffs.
  4. Attach the LED backlight to the back of both map sections.
  5. Hang the map on the standoffs and secure it with the metal screw caps.
5. Do I need to drill into the wall?

Yes. You will need a drill with a 6 mm drill bit suitable for your wall type, as well as a screwdriver, pencil and level.

Wall anchors and standoff mounts are included in the set.

6. How many standoff mounts are included with each map size?

The number of standoff mounts depends on the map size:

• L size — 9 for the main map + 2 for Antarctica = 11 pcs

• XL size — 11 for the main map + 2 for Antarctica = 13 pcs

• XXL size — 15 for the main map + 3 for Antarctica = 18 pcs

7. How long does installation take?

Installation usually takes around 3–3.5 hours, depending on the map size and your pace.

The process is part of the experience — a little like putting together a puzzle — so there is no need to rush. It can be a fun activity to enjoy with family or friends while assembling your map piece by piece.

For the XL and XXL sizes, holding and mounting the map on the wall is easier with two people.

8. Do I need installation templates like with the Classic version?

No. The Premium LED Wooden World Map is first assembled on the mounting board on a table or clean floor, and then mounted on the wall as a complete piece.

9. What batteries does the backlight need?

The LED backlight uses AA batteries. The number of batteries depends on the map size. Each section of the map has its own LED strip and battery box.

A 10 m LED strip uses 3 AA batteries, while a 5 m LED strip uses 2 AA batteries. Batteries are not included.

• L size — 5 m + 5 m LED strips — 4 AA batteries total (2 + 2)

• XL size — 10 m + 5 m LED strips — 5 AA batteries total (3 + 2)

• XXL size — 10 m + 10 m LED strips — 6 AA batteries total (3 + 3)

10. Where is the switch for the LED backlight? Do I need to take the map down to turn it on or off?

No. The switch for the LED backlight is located on the battery box behind the map, and the standoffs leave enough space between the map and the wall to reach it easily.

For the best access, place the battery box close to the outer edge of the map rather than in the centre — near the bottom of South America for part A and near the bottom of Australia for part B. You do not need to take the map down to turn the LED backlight on or off.  See how it looks: [YouTube video link]

11. Is it easy to change the batteries?

Yes. You do not need to remove or unstick the wooden map pieces.

There are two ways to change the batteries:

  1. Remove the map section with the battery box from the wall and replace the batteries.
  2. Unscrew the standoff mounts closest to the battery box and carefully pull the map slightly away from the wall to access it.

If you choose the second option, handle the map carefully to avoid putting too much pressure on the wooden pieces.

You can see how to do it in this video: [YouTube video link]

12. How long do the batteries last?

Battery life depends on the battery quality, capacity and how often you use the LED backlight.

With continuous use, one set of AA batteries typically lasts a few days. If you use the backlight only in the evenings or for a few hours at a time, the batteries will naturally last longer.

13. What do I do with any extra LED strip?

Arrange the LED strip so it covers the back of the map evenly. If you have some extra length, you can either place it closer to the centre or run it alongside the first strip. Areas with two layers of LED strip will glow a little brighter.

You can also trim the excess if needed. Make sure the LED strip stays within the edges of the mounting board.

14. How do I install Antarctica?

Antarctica is installed in the same way as the main map. Attach the Antarctica pieces to their own mounting board, then mount the board on the wall using the included standoffs below the main map.

Please note: Antarctica does not have LED backlighting.

15. How do I protect the map while installing the LED backlight?

To install the LED backlight, place the map engraved side down on a flat surface.

Put a soft blanket or towel underneath to protect the wood and engraving from scratches while you work.

Classic Maps

1. How is the Classic Wooden World Map attached to the wall?

The map pieces are attached directly to the wall using the included double-sided adhesive strips. No drilling or wall anchors are required.

2. What sizes are available, and how much wall space do I need?

The Classic Wooden World Map is available in three sizes.

L Size

  • Map size (W × H): 105 × 60 cm
  • Distance between templates: 90 cm
  • Min. distance from top of template to ceiling: 10 cm

XL Size

  • Map size (W × H): 130 × 72 cm
  • Distance between templates: 112 cm
  • Min. distance from top of template to ceiling: 20 cm

XXL Size

  • Map size (W × H): 181 × 100 cm
  • Distance between templates: 163 cm
  • Min. distance from top of template to ceiling: 30 cm

Before you start, make sure the whole map will fit on the section of wall you've picked.

3. What is included in the Classic Wooden World Map set?
  • Wooden world map pieces — countries and continents laser-cut from natural birch plywood.
  • Double-sided adhesive strips for wall mounting.
  • 2 cardboard installation templates — “Left Side” (Alaska) and “Right Side” (eastern Russia), matched to your map size.
  • Antarctica and the islands that are placed separately around the main map.
  • 18 decorative elements — 6 ships, 5 ocean names, 4 planes, 1 lighthouse, 1 compass rose and 1 anchor.
  • Layout guide and installation instructions.

Please note: GeoTags, country flags and travel pins are not included in the Classic Wooden World Map set by default, but you can add them separately as optional add-ons.

4. What are the cardboard installation templates for?

The cardboard templates help you position the map and set the overall width before installation. They mark the two outer reference points — Alaska on the left and eastern Russia on the right — and serve as a guide for placing the remaining pieces.

The layout does not need to be millimetre-perfect — the templates simply help you achieve a balanced and natural final look.

5. What types of walls are suitable for installing a wooden world map?

The adhesive works best on smooth, flat, clean and dry surfaces such as painted walls, smooth wallpaper, smooth tiles and wood.

We do not recommend installing the map on highly textured plaster, rough wallpaper, dusty surfaces or walls that are crumbling, flaking or unstable.

6. How should I prepare the wall before installation?

Make sure the wall is clean, dry and free from dust, grease or residue.

Wipe the surface carefully using a method suitable for your wall finish. For the best adhesion, we recommend installing the map at a room temperature of at least +18 °C (64 °F) — in a cold room the adhesive doesn't grip as well.

7. What tools do I need to install the wooden world map?

You will need a tape measure or sewing tape, a level, a pencil and painter’s tape (you can also use the double-sided adhesive strips included in the set) for positioning the templates.

It is also helpful to have a large, clean surface such as a table or floor where you can lay out the map pieces before attaching them to the wall.

8. How long does it take to install the wooden world map?

Installation usually takes around 2–3 hours, depending on the map size and your pace.

The process is part of the experience — a little like putting together a puzzle — so take your time and enjoy it. It can be a fun activity to do together with family or friends while creating your own world map piece by piece.

9. Where should I start when installing the map?

Start with the two outer reference points: Alaska on the left and eastern Russia on the right, using the cardboard templates.

Then gradually work from the outer edges towards the centre. We recommend laying out the full map on the floor or a table before attaching the pieces to the wall.

10. Can I reposition a piece if I place it incorrectly?

Yes. If you notice the mistake right after sticking the piece to the wall, you can carefully peel it off and reposition it.

The longer the piece stays on the wall, the stronger the adhesive becomes, so it is best to check the position before pressing it firmly into place.

11. How many adhesive strips should I use for each piece?

One adhesive strip is usually enough for small pieces. For larger pieces, use several strips near the edges and in the centre so the piece stays firmly against the wall and does not lift at the edges.

12. Can I remove the wooden world map from the wall later?

The Classic Wooden World Map is designed for long-term installation. You can remove the pieces from the wall, but the adhesive may leave marks, residue or damage paint or wallpaper, depending on the type and quality of the wall finish. For this reason, we cannot guarantee completely mark-free removal.

If you plan to move or reposition the map in the future, we recommend choosing the PREMIUM version, which is mounted on a board and can be removed from the wall as one piece.

13. Can I add LED lighting to the Classic map?

The LED backlight is part of the PREMIUM version, where the map is mounted on a board with standoffs.

The Classic Wooden World Map sits flat against the wall, so there is no space behind it for LED strips.
